The Chinese Takeout Cookbook Giveaway!

The Chinese Takeout Cookbook Giveaway

What a great 5 months it has been since the release of The Chinese Takeout Cookbook!

The last few months have been a whirlwind of interviews, classes and events, article-writing, and the like. Thank you for all the support. You’ve helped so much by buying the book, recommending it to your friends and family, participating in the Virtual Potluck back in February, and otherwise tweeting, Instagramming, and Facebooking about the book and its recipes.

Other than the potluck, I haven’t had a chance to organize a cookbook giveaway on the blog yet. So today I’m offering up a giveaway for three signed copies of the cookbook! To enter to win one of the copies, just visit the Chinese Recipes archive and leave a comment below, telling me 1 or 2 of the recipes on the Chinese Recipes page that you’re interested in trying out. (The recipes don’t have to be in the cookbook.)

This giveaway will last until May 24th and the three winners will be chosen in a random draw. And we can also see which dishes get the most votes!

Good luck and happy cooking!

Press for The Chinese Takeout Cookbook

Signing a few display copies at Barnes & Noble

You guys are amazing. Thank you for all the congratulations and spreading news about the book, here on the blog, on Facebook, Twitter, and in person. At the risk of coming off cheesy, it’s really incredibly heart-warming to have such great support from the readers of Appetite for China, some of whom have been reading since the very beginning.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

It’s been one month since The Chinese Takeout Cookbook was released and seeing all the good press surrounding the book has been so surreal and wonderful.  There was a recipe review in The Washington Post, radio segments on Let’s Eat In on Heritage Radio Network and The Joan Hamburg Show, a full-page feature in The New York Daily News, not to mention round-ups and reviews in other local press.

An unexpectedly large headshot. But so great to be featured in a paper with such large circulation!

As for events, last night I took part in a cooking demo and book signing at the wonderful BookCourt in Brooklyn. (More pics up to come!) There are other events coming up, including a Chinese Takeout Cookbook Class at the Institute of Culinary Education this coming Sunday, Jan 20th, in which we recreate 8 recipes from the book, including favorites such as egg rolls, sweet and sour pork, and egg drop soup. And I’m planning more events for NY and other cities soon, so stay tuned!

And if you’ve had a chance to enjoy the book so far, it would be so wonderful if you could take a minute to post a review on Amazon to let others know about your experience! Even a short 1 or 2-sentence review would be a great help!

Thank you all so much again for cheering this book on!

The Chinese Takeout Cookbook now on Amazon!

I have some exciting news to share! My cookbook is now finally available on Amazon! Entitled The Chinese Takeout Cookbook, it’ll be released on December 11, 2012 and will feature 80+ recipes for making Chinese takeout better at home, using all-natural ingredients and tried-and-true methods.

I’ve been very giddy since seeing it on Amazon over the weekend at a friend’s house. Almost two years ago, in July of 2010, I started working on a book proposal with an idea in mind for a cookbook that celebrates Chinese food in the US. Still, it was unfathomable how quickly this would all take shape (with all the recipe testing and photography and food-styling) and that two years later I’d be jumping up and down in excitement seeing my book available for pre-order.

It’s been a crazy, fun, intense, caffeine-fueled two years, and I’m so happy you guys have been along for the ride! It’d be so wonderful and a huge help if you could check out the cookbook and “like” on Amazon. Thank you so much for being a part of this journey!

President Obama Gets Takeout Dim Sum

(Photo from the SFGate.com)

Chinese food doesn’t make national headlines very often, so it was a pleasant surprise to see a Chinese takeout-related story all over the news today. On Thursday, President Obama made a surprise stop in San Francisco’s Chinatown while in town for a fundraising event. He went to Great Eastern Restaurant, and after a round of hand-shaking, left with two big bags of takeout.

Ever since I started working on my book, I’ve been super curious about which Chinese dishes famous people like to eat. (Hey, it’s research!) Luckily, KTSF 26, a San Francisco Chinese-language news station, appeared to have gotten a photo of Obama’s dim sum order, which fellow food writer Michele Humes shared on Facebook. The President was apparently a big fan of pretty much all the dumplings, plus the egg tarts, deep-fried crab claws, and deep-fried shrimp puffs (I get those cravings too…)

And changed his mind about the sticky rice.
