September 23, 2011How to Make Vietnamese Coffee (video)One of my favorite food videographers is Eric Slatkin, founder of Hit the High Beam productions. Before he went out on his own, he worked at CHOW to produce terrific and informative videos. We worked on a couple of CHOW projects, including the Perfect Shanghai Soup Dumpling, and I was hooked on his talents.
I’ve learned lots about food videography from working with Eric. He directed, filmed, and edited the Asian Dumplings enhanced e-book videos. We also collaborated on the how-to videos for the Asian Market Shopper app.
Eric has a terrific sense of humor, timing, and storytelling. We discussed Vietnamese coffee a while ago and this past week, he sent me the awesome video. He gets some crazy Viet Thai music in there, along with little insider bits of info like licking the spoon of condensed milk, which I always do!
Watching Eric's "How to Make Vietnamese Coffee" video gives me a ca-fe buzz. It's superb. Enjoy.

What's the great song used in the video? It's great.
Posted by:Ben Lyons |September 23, 2011 at 01:15 PMI don't know what the ding dong song is and will ask Eric to chime in!
Posted by:Andrea Nguyen |September 23, 2011 at 01:36 PMThe end credits to the video say:
Music: Waipod Phetsuphan - Ding Ding Dong (Thailand)
Back in the good old (pre-Twitter) days we watched things until the very end. :-)
Posted by:Steven Hall |September 23, 2011 at 01:58 PMOkay, Andrea, I was thinking about learning about the Vietnamese coffee filter because I'd heard about it, but now I've got a one-track mind and will GET a Vietnamese coffee filter for my daily use. I'm sold!! Thanks for the wonderful post.
Posted by:Laura |September 23, 2011 at 06:19 PMAndrea: Surprises me that you say "some crazy Viet music". That's clearly not Vietnamese language.
Posted by:luke |September 23, 2011 at 06:41 PMSteve: Thanks for going to the end for me. I had a poor connection and it was streaming very slowly. I stopped before I got to the credits. Made the edit to the music mention!
Posted by:Andrea Nguyen |September 23, 2011 at 08:51 PMLaura: You can also just brew a really strong, inky cup of coffee and stir it into the condensed milk.
Posted by:Andrea Nguyen |September 23, 2011 at 08:51 PMLuke: I've listened to some Vietnamese folk music that has some unusual rhythms and beats. The piece above reminded me of those, though I agree with you that it's hard to make out the words. But then, it's hard to make out the words in some English-language songs these days. ;-)
Posted by:Andrea Nguyen |September 23, 2011 at 08:54 PMThis food videography is amazing one.Its very enjoyable and superb one.Its on the Coffee video.Very first time i have seen this type of video.Nice sharing it is.
Posted by:codigo promocional |September 25, 2011 at 10:31 PMThis video made me smile...and inspired me to finally buy my own little filter and coffee. The lady at the checkout stand at the Vietnamese store was like "you know this is strong right? Not American coffee?" I assured her I understood and that I was even half Vietnamese myself so I REALLY understood. Thanks for sharing!
Posted by:Autumn |September 25, 2011 at 10:55 PMWhoops. I guess I should have waited for the credits. Youtube has trained me not to look/wait for credits since you have maybe a 50% chance of seeing any.
Posted by:Ben Lyons |September 26, 2011 at 08:47 AMBen -- no problem! You're right, videos rarely have credits these days. LOL.:)
Posted by:Andrea Nguyen |September 27, 2011 at 03:12 PMI didn't know that Vietnamese coffee is so special but I really would like to try it
